CLOVIS TO CORONADO:
ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE SOUTHWEST

Summer 2008 Online

Instructor: Matthew L. Littler, M.A., mlittler@email.arizona.edu

Section #: 1
Credits:
3
Dates: Summer Session II (July 14th - August 13th)

Textbooks: The Archaeology of Ancient Arizona and Grasshopper Pueblo: A Story of Archaeology and Ancient Life by Jefferson Reid and Stephanie Whittlesey. There are also additional readings online in PDF format. View the full reading list. (All readings are listed at the beginning of each section of a Module.)

Format: This course will take place completely online. There will be no traditional “lectures” and you will not be required to come to the university campus. The material will be divided into 5 modules, one for each week that the class runs. The Web site will contain "lecture" text, slides, and links for each module, and possibly video clips or other media to enhance the learning experience. There will be readings from the textbook for each module, plus online readings in pdf format that you can download. All of the required readings are listed at the beginning of each topic in a module. Once you have completed a module, you will take an online quiz. The course will be mostly self-paced, so that you can work on the modules when you have time. You can work through the modules as quickly as you like, but there will be due dates that each module must be completed by, to prevent procrastinators from waiting until the last week to do all the modules (You know who you are!).

Evaluation: You will be graded on the quizzes and the paper that you will complete. Most of your grade is based on the quizzes, but you must turn in a paper in order to pass the course. Failure to submit a paper will result in a failing grade!

Assignment # Points Total
Quizzes: 5 40 200
Papers: 1 100 100
    Total: 300

The standard grading scale is employed:

A = 90 - 100% (270-300 points total)
B = 80 - 89% (240-269 points total)
C = 70 - 79% (210-239 points total)
D = 60 - 69% (180-209 points total)
E = 0 - 59% (below 180 points)

Incompletes: No incompletes will be given. In case of incomplete fulfillment of course requirements, a letter grade (A, B, C, D, E) will be assigned on the basis of the total accumulated points.

How to Complete Modules: I recommend the following steps for working through each module: (1) Go to the Web page for the module and read the text there and view the slides; (2) Read the required readings for each of the topics of the module; (3) Study the important terms for each module and your readings; (4) Take the quiz for the module. The sequence you use is up to you, but this is the most logical.

Schedule: Below is the schedule you must follow to complete the course. I have built in a degree of flexibility by allowing you to complete the quiz for each module as early as you like before the due date.
