Ed P 411/511: Computer Applications in Education

Syllabus


Edp 411/511 is offered as a course through the Internet. The purpose of this class is to provide you with an appreciation, knowledge of, and skills necessary for using computers in the classroom. You will learn the essentials of learning theory, instructional design theory, computer operations, presentation software, telecommunications, computer-based assessment, and application of this knowledge to instruction.

Course Goals and Objectives

After the completion of this course, the student will be able to facilitate learning in educational settings through the application of technology. The student will:

  1. Integrate appropriate learning and instructional design theories with technology for application in the classroom.
  2. Develop and apply knowledge/skills related to using computers in the classroom.
  3. Develop an appreciation for and a positive attitude toward using computers in the classroom.

Course Format

Unlike traditional courses, there will be few lectures and presentations by the instructors. The student will be asked to interact with the material and other students through the Internet. Because of the nature of this course, it is the student's responsibility to complete the units and lessons on or before the deadlines.

    In order to participate in this class you will need access to the following:

  • Netscape version 3.0 or higher
  • The Internet (via modem or direct connection - see sites below)
  • A number of high density (HD) 3.5" floppy disks

Grading and Evaluation

Final grades will be assigned in accordance with University of Arizona guidelines, based on the following weights:

15% = Exercises
20% = Class Participation (includes Computer Responses)
30% = Development Assignments (including the Midterm project)
35% = Final Poster Project
It is strongly suggested that students keep a "hard copy"of all assignments.
