Unit Two: Learning Theory, Instructional Design Theory, and Their Application to Presentations

Unit 2

Goals:

This unit will familarize you with the concepts and process of learning theories, instructional design theories, and their application to computer based instruction. You will learn about two models of instructional design and apply one of them to your course project.

Objectives:

When you have finished this unit, you will be able to:

  1. identify learning theory and instructional technology concepts.
  2. recognize the integration of learning theory concepts and instructional technology in a classroom situation.
  3. develop a PowerPoint presentation which incorporates the concepts of learning theory and instructional technology.

Activities and Assignments

Complete each of the activities and assignments in the order they are presented below.

Lesson 1: Basic Learning Theory

  1. Read the information at the following link: Learning Theory Foundations
  2. Read Chapter 3, pages 54-77 in the Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching text.
  3. The following articles are recommended:
    1. "From Behaviorism to Humanism:...."
    2. "Learning in Open-ended Environments:..."
    3. "Redesigning Classroom Activities in the Future"

Lesson 2: Designing and selecting instructional materials

  1. Read the information at the following link: Introduction to Instructional Design
  2. Read Chapters 6, 7 & 8 in Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching .
  3. The following articles are recommended:
  4. The Instructional Systems Design Model (Objectivist)

    Cognitive Flexibility & the HyperMedia Design Model (Constructivist)
