Throughout history many cultures have broken off to form their own sub cultures. This is perhaps best illustrated through the sub-culture know as the Wiccans. This group of people has fought skepticism, from outside cultures, for the right to practice their own beliefs. The Wiccan sub-culture can most easily be understood through the use of creation myth, beliefs and unjust stereotypes.
Behind almost every religious subculture there is a myth about how the world came to be. This is no different in the Wiccan culture. They are so many different branches of Wicca that it is hard to keep strait which branch does what. Each branch has their own similarities and differences but the common similarity they all shares is within the creation myth. The Wiccan creation myth goes against what is considered, in America's opinion "normal" and is therefore thought of as evil and wrong. The Wiccans believe that a woman was masturbating and achieved orgasm. This orgasm was so great that the heavens and the stars were created. Since the subject matter deals with sex, most other cultures and subcultures, do not tolerate this idea because they have a hard dealing with this subject matter, let alone talking about it. Psychology has taught us that people fear what they do not understand and also are scared when people do not agree with them. This reasoning is another reason why most cultures do not accept nor tolerate the Wiccans.
In addition to having an idea about how the world is created, the Wiccan sub culture also has a set of beliefs that they try to follow. Wiccans believe that everything, including inanimate objects, have a spirit that watches over that object. This set of beliefs causes the Wiccans to respect everything and only use what they need. If a Wiccan needs a branch to make something, he or she will first apologize to the tree for taking its branches and then thank the tree once the branches have been taken from its trunk. Wiccans also strongly believe in the art of meditation and spell casting. They believe that there are four main spirits in the world and every time you meditate you try to contact the spirits. These spirits are north, east, south and west, also know as the Four Corners. They never cast a spell to harm someone, and never kill anything to cast a spell. The spells they cast are usually to help someone else in a time of need or to stop someone from causing anymore harm. Wiccans do not know how the spell will occur, or for that matter in at way it will come to them, but they know in time that the spell will come true. Mediation and spell casting has many levels, and is impossible to master. The higher level spells occur over a period of time and with years of practice. In the Wiccan sub-culture there is no such thing as rank.
The exaggerated stories about the Wiccans, misunderstandings of what they are trying to do and the twisting of the fact has earned the Wiccan subculture a bad reputation. This is exemplified in literature. In the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, Wiccans play a major role. This literature gives stereotypical examples of witches casting spells and wearing stereotypical clothes. The Wiccans have been shown in movies as people who wear all black clothing, a pointed black hat, ride around on a broomstick and always carry a black cat. This is far from the truth. The Wiccans are actually normal people, who dress the same as every other person. If you are walking down the street and see someone walk next to you who seems "normal" then that might just be a Wiccan. If that person is actually a Wiccan he or she will be able to tell if you are a Wiccan thought. According to myth, Wiccans can tell whether people around them are of the same subculture though what is known as "energy play." Energy play is a theory that everyone gives off a certain energy and Wiccans supposedly give off more than any other culture or subculture and can identify each other by this phenomena.
The movie studious have taken the Wiccan sub-culture and exaggerated it for entertainment value and also the studios have given the public the idea that all Wiccans are evil, that they worship the devil and perform sacrifices. One such example of this is in the movie The Craft. This movie showed Wiccans dressing in all black, using their "powers" for their own good, harming others and also flying. Movie studios have also given the Wiccan sub-culture the nickname, "witches." The Wiccan sub-culture must now try to educate the world and break away from the unjust stereotypes that people have given them.
The Wiccans, unfortunately, are a very misunderstood subculture. People in life try to discover where they will best fit in. Since some beliefs are not accepted nor tolerated in the world, especially in the United States, some people never find where they will ever fit in. Just like every person, the Wiccan subculture has grown, suffered, overcome fear, faced anxiety and proved stereotypes wrong to become the subculture they are today.
