Van Dusen, L. M., and Worthen, B. R. (1995) "Can Integrated Instructional Technology Transform the Classroom?" Educational Leadership, 53, 28-33.

This article posits that Integrated Learning Systems (ILSs) can be effective if utilized to their full potential. The authors outline five areas in which ILSs can influence change in the classroom, with the emphasis on individuation of instruction. They identify six key criteria that are present in schools which have used ILS to improve student achievement. The most intriguing aspect is the mention of some ILS systems that are moving beyond drill-and-practice modes.
