Tri-University Conference
Developing a 12-Hour Women's Studies Program
Through Distance Learning

Notes from Wednesday, May 24
Erika Giesen

Funding (Hoffman, McBride):

· Funding not only students but also faculty is essential
· Money for computer sites/centers in the community at various sites needs to be found, most likely through ARU. This includes computers themselves, Internet hookup and replacing/maintaining computers. Sites already in place already have transportation to them, day care, community trust and history, and computers, which makes them particularly attractive. Women's Studies will not be solely responsible for these sites - all distance courses will be taught there. However, we want input into what kind of community sites UA will be creating. Community centers need to be consulted to see if they are interested in being a site or not. Public libraries and schools may be the place to look since the feds are already committed to connectivity. Facilitators and/or help line needed, either through the UA or the CBO.
· We should keep thinking of the AG extension program
· ARU probably has money to support rural distance development; also money for programs/certificates, not just individual courses
· UA/Pima are in the process of developing a "bridge" site for distance courses
· Hoffman may have older computers from taking down a campus lab for homebound people
· Cooperative extension program may have some resources for us
· Santa Rosa (Rita?) housing project being built south of town that is also conceived of as a computer center - possibility?
· Grad student TAs would be nice, but there's no money for it. Undergrads can be trained, but only for class credit. What is really needed is hardware training, not simply software.
· There may be foundational and/or federal support for technology and women's studies, but this is short term.
· Beth is the person to talk to for the undergrad technology preceptor program
· www.mll.arizona.edu - preceptor program
· Money sources from Marsha Ham: "As a follow-up to our discussion, Dan Roman and Garry Forger are working on the wireless grant to HP. The more I think about it, I'm not sure if there would be a fit with your needs, but it doesn't hurt to ask. The other source I mentioned is returning to the Learning Technology Partnership group before the end of the current fiscal year to request an additional grant to fund student technology needs."
· How are we going to deal with ownership of the syllabi we develop?

To Do Before the October Meeting:
· Speaking with Sally Jackson about money - what kind of proposal do they need from us? ("Partnerships" and "workforce"); how much money will we need? What about time off for faculty development? Partnering with community colleges? (Liz, Ruth and Kari)
· A report back from us about the conference - summary. (Kari and Erika)
· Reconnect with the community groups - follow up. And take our curriculum/course titles for input (Julia and Pat)
· Meeting in the fall with Tri-Universities - 5th or 19th of October. Listen to people's concerns from NAU and ASU; report back on connections with community groups. (Liz, Kari, Kathleen, Geeta)
· Run our curriculum by UA, NAU and ASU faculty before we take it to community groups
· Money and grants discussion with Jan Monk (Liz)
· Find out what's happening at the other Universities with money and support (Kathleen and Geeta)
· Connect with Raytheon? The point is to expand our conception of the women taking our course. Many working class women are working 8-4 factory jobs.
· Connecting with the reservations/tribal colleges? (Kathleen)
· Who is the population served at the AG extension sites? Only at UA. (Julia)
· Communicate with the Maine people to see if Judy can take one of their classes this fall. What do they call it? (Judy)
· Tentatively discuss it as an "E-Certificate" - discuss with ASU and NAU (All)
