Description: There will be at least one quiz almost every week of class, usually at the beginning of class. The quizzes will take a variety of forms: some will consist of 3 questions asking for short paragraph answers. Sometimes I will have you take the quiz first individually and then (the same quiz) with your group. Sometimes I will ask you to work with your group to analyze a passage of poetry or a scholarly argument. Note that you cannot make up a quiz that you have missed; if you know ahead of time that you will be gone from class, you may make arrangements to take the quiz in advance of the scheduled date.
Bonus: You will not take the quiz scheduled for the day your group makes its presentation.
Purpose: Writing the quiz will help you analyze, evaluate, extrapolate, and synthesize salient ideas in a reading or set of readings. Taking the quiz with your group gives you another way to learn the material, through discussion.
Method: To study for the quizzes, read and mark or take notes on assigned material using critical reading strategies.
Evaluation: Answers must
be complete and correct. The quizzes count as 25% of your grade. While
you cannot make up a quiz that you have missed, I will drop your lowest
quiz score at the end of the semester to allow for emergencies.
