kat sabine announced that Class Notes have not been graded as of yet (look for those emails soon). The class notes are sent to Kat and if they look good, she places them on the web. If your notes are sent back then you need to revise the class notes (add more detail and/or make clear for everyone to read) and sent to kat once more, so she can put them on the web. As of today all the class notes that kat has recieved are posted.

Quiz 2 is not grade yet, we will get them back Monday 16th
-Note for class: Women's Studies Writing Center has extended it hours. Go online to see the hours consultants are available. http://www.u.arizona.edu/ic/mcbride/indv/indvfac.htm

-The article for today was "Children and Gender: Constructions of Difference" by Barrie Thorne pp. 30-41

In class we used this article to practice and to give some tips on completing the Research report 1 that is due Monday the 16th in class.

--Question: What need to be the longest part of the report?
--Answer: You should really try to balance the four tasks, Each subtend should be equal explained.

Each group was asked to practice one of the four task assigned in the research report 1
Each Resource Report should complete four tasks: it should provide a SUMMARY of the information in the article or other resource, an ANALYSIS of its assumptions and argument, an EVALUATION of its reliability, authority, and intended audience, and a SYNTHESIS of its ideas with other class readings and themes.

-Question: What does Dualistic mean in regards to writing the summary?
-Answer: Dualistic is a important differences in boys/girls and start with assumptions. It is the dominant popular voice with complexity being lost. EX. Boys and girls play together, the teachers enforced this. The Gender difference involves how boys/girls are treated and how society separates them. (What does the word Androcentric mean? It means Man Centered. Androgynous? Means having man and women traits.) The world tends to be andocentric, researching Men is the normal and women along the side.

Tips
- Summary should really try to balance the four tasks, Each subtend should be equal explained.
-Analysis should be clear on the assumptions and arguments. The Thesis should be the punch point in this section. You can even write "This thesis is..." or even "the authors argument is that..."
-Evaluation should include reliability, authority, and intended audience.
-Synthesis should include ideas with other class readings and themes. Its is good to questions the authors, but put more measure in the terms of creditability. Give credit were credit is due but be careful to back up what you say so you are creditable. Also draw out examples from the other article used and have strong sentence explaining how they are the same.

-Monday- research report 1 due
Turn in stapled with name and citation. Don‚t forget to label each section.
GOOD LUCK

Thorne/Resource Report 1

New hours are available for help with the report or class work. Hours are
posted online.

Tying the two together:
Groups 1&2 wrote the summary for the Thorne article
Groups 3&4 wrote the analysis for the Thorne article
Groups 5&6 wrote the evaluation for the Thorne article
Groups 7&8 wrote the synthesis for the Thorne article

Group 1 and 2's summary:
In Thorne‚s article, Thorne criticizes strategies of adults raising and teaching children. Children are exposed to experiences that influence their perceptions of the world around them.
Professor McBride:
Dualism; we have an assumption that there is going to be a big difference between boys and girls. Researchers go in and only look at certain kids- only the popular interactive boys are represented. Anything overlooked isn't represented. Teachers re-enforce gender difference, and this gender difference is circled and underlined. Girls cross gender boundaries more frequently then men simply because it‚s easier. To be a sissy-vs.-being a tomboy. To be a tomboy is to gain power because you have become masculine, the Œdominant‚ gender. When you‚re a sissy, you become weak because you become more feminine. Masculine power‚ is demonstrated in children in the situation where a boy will break up a group of girls. (Hedge mantic masculinity referred to)
Group 3's Analysis:
Thorne uses logical defense for adults to read to show that studies need more
research in order to make an accurate assumption.
Professor McBride:
The thesis needs to stick out. The readers look for the most important parts. The author argues that an elegant introduction (use on resource report) Main idea-VS-Thesis
Group 4's added Analysis:
Gender marked moments seem to express core truths: boys and girls are separate and fundamentally different as individuals and as groups. Complexities are also a part of the story. Thorne demonstrates this through defining dualism, illustrating the importance of the context of interaction as well as to identify outside sources that aren‚t included in many studies.
Group 5 and 6's Evaluation:
Thorne is making people aware of the fact that children are exposed to gender roles as youths, but Thorne does not have a solution to the problem. She focuses on gender mainly and not facts such as age, height, ETC. The reliability is questionable.
Group 7‚s Synthesis:
Men had/have more power in conversation, as stated in Spenders article. This affects children and how they are raised to grow into their future roles as adults. Teachers separate children by gender which evolves into the man being dominate and important, while the women are merely conversation Œtools‚ progressing a conversation and being the listener.
Group 8's added Synthesis:

Thorne and Stack are related in the way of the categories of gender, sex, and age.
Monday:
Resource Report 1 due. You don‚t need to turn the paper in a formal way (ex. Plastic covers). You do need to have your name on the report as well as correct citations, and the 4 sections covered today. Balance the 4 categories in length. The summary should contain the most important details. Quotes aren't required but are nice- use simple citation form when using quotes.
