Some work will be done as group activities. Divided into eight groups. Please see Prof. McBride or kat if you are not in a group.
Assigned topics coordinating with the syllabus topics:

• White women found working class as liberating, but minority and poor women did not find this to be the case. Out of the home and into public workspaces were not liberating for all women.
• Hegemonic masculinity: dominate form of "boyness" at any moment. Opposed to femininity and ‘weaker’ forms of masculinities.
  
• Why prism metaphor - blending from one to next, and distinctive colors mixed in. Different from quilt metaphor as our identities are not 'chunked' together to create patterns, but rather blended from one distinction to the next

Who matters in movies on television?

• Rock stars and superstars: Dominated by male musicians women singers. Mostly white families/ married/ beautiful/ upper middle-class/ young
  
• Older men appearing as a star with VERY young women
  
• Heroism: in terms of men who formed the country. Mostly white. Narratives about politics and economy leaving out family life and women.
  
• Wealth: whitemiddleclassmale. Who controls our natural resources control our lives.
  

Group activity: compile statistics about from newspaper

1. Who wrote the stories?
2.who are the stories about and photos?
3. What are people in stories doing - active or passive - victim or not?

Findings:
1: ART women are generalized and grouped, men are individually identified. All white, no minorities. 4of 5 authors are men. Book promotion all men authors
2:INTERNATIONAL all men no women spokespersons. Even more male photos
3: BUSINESS male dominated and active, women were victims or fashion mavens
4: TUCSON REGION male photographers, 18 women and 12 men authors. Election candidates, prominent figures male.
5: SPORTS only two women wrote about baseball and finances. Only two photos of women advertisements for strip clubs and sports
6: BUSINESS AZ no women quoted though editor is woman. One article about woman who is a graphic designer. Overwhelmingly middle age men. one article job sharing for women
