summary asks the question "what" and is looking for main ideas
and examples:
biological differences are meaningless until social practices create dynamics
that divide people into two or more groups. Some biological differences are
made to come into conformity with gender ideals because of social meaning meaning,
social practices become transformed into social fact.
Examples from "Believing is Seeing" by
Judith Lorber: upper body physical strength, the norm for most men, but not
all. Women body builders had to advertise that flex appeal is sex appeal. Gray's
anatomy; norm is male body except pictures of pregnancy and lactation. Olympic
coverage to feminine female sports such as gymnastics and ice skating vs. discus
and basketball. Men have more physical demands (triple axle vs. women's single
axle). Adult men compete in gymnastics, and young girls. White men are referred
to by last name, women and minority athletes called by first names; i.e.. Venus
and Serena. Male athletes get interviewed in towels, women not allowed in. female
marathon consistently gets better while men's has remained stagnant.
Main ideas (other examples)
jobs: first computer programmers were women in 40's, but became increasingly
blocked out of those jobs as they became more lucrative. Public bathroom issues
where parity is NOT equality.
page 19 "Paradox of human nature is that...." expectations become
a template that overlays biological differences so that even very young children
age three or less are molded by them.
