Welfare Monopoly:
For most of the class period we played an interesting game within our groups called Welfare Monopoly, which was designed by Carolyn and Maddy.
- It is similar to the actual Monopoly game, but it instead shows what it would be like to live on welfare.
- The objective is to survive each month on welfare and get around the board and be able to pay rent for an apartment. The winner is whoever has the most money at the end of the game.
- Each person starts out with $900, and one baby. You are only given the opportunity to buy an apartment if you land on any of the six selected spots (yellow and lavender). If you pay the $500 for rent then you receive a rent voucher, which enables you to receive another $900 when you pass Go.
- If you cannot afford any of the bills, you are sent to jail for three turns or until doubles are rolled.
- This game illustrates the expensive aspects of single parenthood. It was very difficult to financially survive a month with the endless costs such as grocery shopping, car expenses, rent, electric bill, goodwill shopping, etc.
