Description:To earn Honors credit for this course, you must read a book on the topics your group is assigned, turn in a written report on the book, and make a short presentation to the class on your report.
Purpose: Reading and reporting on a book related to class themes will allow you to explore the topic more fully than is possible through the regular syllabus. Others in the class will also benefit from your extra research through your in-class report.
Method: Make an appointment with the professor early in the semester to discuss your book choice and to schedule a date for your oral presentation. You must schedule your oral report by Friday, September 6. Ideally, your report will coincide with the class unit to which your report is related.
Your written report (and the oral report that is based upon it) should summarize the main points of the book, evaluate its argument, and synthesize its points with class themes and/or readings. The finished report should be 800-1250 words (4-5 pages, double-spaced). Turn in the written report to the professor on the day of your class presentation. Feel free to go over a first version of the report ahead of time with the professor, the TA, a preceptor, or a consultant at the Women's Studies Writing Center.
Your in-class presentation should be no more than 10 minutes long including time for questions and answers from the class. Feel free to use overhead images, videos, sound recordings, or other helps as appropriate.
Evaluation: To receive Honors credit,
you must get your book choice approved and your report scheduled by the
required date and must turn in a report that meets the requirements listed
above. Your oral presentation should be clear and comprehensible (you may
read from a shorter version of your written report if you wish) and should
stay within the time limit.
