Course Policies
Regular attendance, preparation, and participation are required. I will take attendance regularly and will count it towards your Participation credit. Participation implies that you prepare the day's readings and that you engage appropriately in class activities. Do NOT read a newspaper or materials for other classes during this class. Do NOT eat during class. Do NOT sleep during class. If you find it necessary to engage in any of these activities between 11:00 and 11:50 on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday over the course of the next semester, plan to miss class that day. Do NOT answer your cell phone in class. If you must be available because of parenting or other responsibilities, set your phone or pager to vibrate, and leave the room inconspicuously to make your call. Do NOT start packing up your materials to leave before 11:50 or until we have finished our work for the day. The bottom line: respect others, respect the process of education. If you cannot abide by these ground rules, this is not the class for you. Drop now.

You are expected to take notes during class for later reference and study. Be an active, not a passive, learner. Come to class prepared to teach and open to learning.

Assignments are due on the date listed in the syllabus. Do not even think of asking for an extension until you have developed a track record with me of responsible and timely scholarship or unless you call me from the emergency room. You may not make up a quiz that you have missed. This policy is absolute and unbendable. You may, however, arrange to take a quiz ahead of time if you know that you will be absent for a school activity. (Talk with the TA at least one week in advance to make arrangments.) And I will drop your lowest quiz score at the end of the semester to allow for the usual exigencies of student life. You must complete all assignments to receive credit for the course.

Some assignments and class activities require you to work in a small group. If you do not wish to participate in group activities--i.e., if you plan to live the rest of your life as a hermit on a remote desert island--this is not the class for you. Drop now.

All work you turn in should be neat, clear, and appropriate to university scholarship. In-class work should be written in legible pen or pencil on lined or unlined paper not torn from a spiral notebook--in other words, professional work in which you take pride. Assignments you prepare out of class should be typed or word processed and double spaced. Always put your first AND last names on all assignments.

Grades will be calculated on the following scale: 90-100%=A, 80-90%=B, etc. I do not curve, and I do not offer extra credit. You may be required to revise some assignments. You may be required to meet with the professor, with the TA, or with a consultant from the Women's Studies Writing Center as part of the revision process. Revised work will be graded by the same standard as first versions.

This course requires you to access the Internet. However, no previous computer or Net skills are required; the purpose of these assignments is to help you get the skills you need to succeed at the University. If you need help with any required task, make an appointment with the TA, a graduate preceptor, a librarian, or a consultant at the Women's Studies Writing Center. You are expected to check your email at least once a week and more often if assigned. The syllabus may change during the semester. Expect to review and/or update your printed version as changes are announced. Go online for more information on Computing on Campus.

Plagiarism and other cheating will result in a grade of E for this course and possible expulsion from the University. Here are some tips on how to cite sources appropriately and honestly.

Your continued presence in this classroom implies your acceptance of these policies. If you cannot abide by these terms, drop the course now.
