 Introduction

Girls: Growing up on the border, is the topic of our website. Each member of our group has contributed an individual report having to do with one aspect of girls growing up on the border, especially in the area of Tucson, Arizona.  Tucson, Arizona is located in the Southwest United States in Southern Arizona.  It is home to the University of Arizona where we are attending college, and this web page is a result of a group project.  Tucson is considered to be a "contact zone" or a place where people of different cultures or beliefs come together.  Tucson is in close vicinity to Native American Indian reservations as well as the border to Mexico.  Therefore, the schools in the Tucson consist of much ethnic and cultural diversity, which we believe has an affect on the adolescent girls in the city of Tucson. We all worked together with our mentor Jenny Arnold, the class teaching assistant who has personal experience in working with and researching adolescent girls.  In order to gain information on our subjects, we conducted research through the University library and interviews with local adolescent girls.  The breakdown of our individual topics are:

Candace- Drugs and Alcohol in the Adolescent Years

Kathryn- Risks surrounding hispanic adolescent girls in education and schools

Marie- Adolescent girls at risk

Michelle- Girls: Growing Up in the Global Education System

Catherine- Special education of Native American girls

Will- Reference list and additional material
