Music of Occitan
Renaissance Lyrics; Aphra Behn
Tuesday

Music of Occitan- Something that is very controversial among scholars is how this music is supposed to sound. A lot of the instruments used back then were not preserved and so it is hard to reduplicate them. i.e. there was an instrument somewhere in between a piano and a harpsichord.

Renaissance Lyrics- Many of these lyrics were also set to music. They are lyrics in the sense of short poems. Very much in the tradition of Archaic Greek lyrics. These lyrics are similar to the "Song of Songs" in that they objectify  and sexualize the woman's body. These lyrics become very violent, and are often fragmentative (describe woman's body in pieces- not a whole being, just sexual parts).

Poems by Aphra Behn- this is right out of the syllabus...
"Aphra Behn was both noted and notorious in her day as a poet, playwright, and sometime spy. No doubt her notoriety arose
not only because of her gender but for her openness in speaking of love with the same frankness as many male poets. "The
Disappointment," published in 1680, turns the tables on the male lover-poet. "

Tuesday- There is a quiz on tuesday!!! (you have been warned...smile...)
