The class took an interesting quiz today. Each group had to make up three questions and then switch with another group and answer those questions.
Here are some of the questions and some answers (I took these questions right off the page):

1. Question about Unit 7 introduction:

"Why was the invention of the printing press significant in the Early Modern Era?" -group 2

"It increased literacy within the middle class and allowed the middle class people to address their ideas and concerns, which included the "woman question"."-group 4

2. Question about Gluckel  of Hameln:

"How was Gluckel different from other Jewish women of the time period? What struggles did she overcome and how did she do it?" - group 3

"She was different because she was a successful businesswoman. She was literate and participated in her husband's work. She overcame the death of her first husband, who she dearly loved, to pay off the family's debt. She overcame the oppression of being forced to move away from the city center. She remained independent." - group 10

3. Question about David Goldblatt's "Jewish Women of the Southwest":

"What is the concept of the Crypto-Jew? Explain the importance of women in this culture."- group 7

"The concept of the Crypto-Jew is that the Jewish people (particularly Spanish Jews) were forced to convert to Catholicism- kept-up sacred Jewish traditions in secret. The women were significant because they were responsible for passing down beliefs and sacred traditions." - group 8

John Swift  "The Ladies Dressing Room"

Swift (1667-1745) was a clergyman. He wrote this misogynistic (misogyny is the hatred of women) poem about what would be found in a woman's dressing room. He uses epic similes (i.e. reference to Pandora's Box) throughout the poem to make things seem more important than they are.

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu "The Reasons that Induced Dr.S to write a poem called The Ladies Dressing Room"

Montagu (1689-1762) wrote this in response to Swift's poem. She uses the same type of introduction and slowly works her way into ripping into Swift- in an elegant way of course. Basically, she calls him (and everyone for that matter) for thinking and acting better than they really are. Calls him on sleeping with a prostitute.
