McBride article: Pocahontas,
Sacajawea, La Malinche:
-
Disney's version of Pocahontas is romanticized/glamorized/idealized.
-
These women are all examples of the "contact zone"
.
-
Pocahontas ( according to Disney) was idealized
sexually- turned into a barbie doll figure with a tan as opposed to the
10-12 year old little girl she was in real life.
-
The goal in early Disney films is marriage->Sleeping
Beauty, Cinderella. It has gotten a LITTLE better-> Mulan, Beauty and the
Beast.
-
In reality, "Pocahontas" is not even her real name
- that means naughty one; she was kidnapped and forced to marry Rolfe.
Once married she was forced into the European culture
-
Pocahontas, Sacajawea, La Malinche had very different
lives, but all seen as "mothers" of a new culture.
-
La Malinche is blamed for the down fall of Mexico.
Known as a traitor- her name was changed to and became the word for traitor.
She has become a symbol for Chicana feminists- being blamed for things
she had no control over- like who she was sold to.
-
Sacajawea was also sold to a man. Vital to the
travels of Lewis and Clark, but only noticed when she bore the child that
would become the symbol of the union between indigenous and european people.
