Quiz:
1. According to Barbara Welter, “true
womanhood” in the mid nineteenth century was defined by four “cardinal
virtues.” What were they?
Piety, purity, submissiveness,
domesticity
2. Give one specific and detailed
example of how women’s needlework and/or textiles reflected the history
of the time in
which they were made, as shown in
the video Hearts and Hands.
These women, free and slaves, made
images and communicated with others about of their lives through quilting.
E.g. a woman would create
little ships if her husband was
a sailor; might created a log cabin pattern if were traveling or just settled
down; slaves created underground
railroad patterns to provide maps
or “safe flags” for run away slaves.
3. According to Lynn Teague of the
Arizona State Museum, among Native American societies of the Southwest,
did men
or women do the weaving? Explain.
Both women and men did the weaving.
Depends on the function of the piece. If it was ceremonial or for trades
the men would weave. If it
were for domestic reasons the women
would weave.
Bonus: According to Deborah Gray
White in her article “The Nature of Female Slavery” in Kerber and Dehart’s
Women’s
America, what were the particular
features of women’s experiences as slaves?
These women were bred like animals.
They had to do the fieldwork, like the men, but would also go back to their
houses and do all the
housework.
