Unit 4
Quiz questions and answers:

1. According to the Introduction to Unit 4, who was Asherah, and why is she important to our understanding of Women and the Hebrew Bible?

Asherah was a fertility goddess who was worshipped alongside "God". Over time, as the Hebrew Religion starts becoming monotheistic, she was written out of the records. There is archaeological evidence, such as idles and fragments of altars, proving she was once worshipped.

 2. Recount the story of Adam and Eve (Genesis 2-3) as accurately as you can.

If you are not familiar with the story of Adam and Eve go to the syllabus and follow the assignments. Now, here are some things to keep in mind: the serpent only turns to satan in contemporary readings( some would say it is an etiological reading- explaining natural world); the forbidden fruit only became and apple in contemporary readings; the overall punishment for Adam and Eve was that of "fertility made difficult" Adam would have to work to support the family, and lbor would be hard for Eve.

 3. Trible contrasts the personalities of Eve and Adam by their actions.  How does she characterize each of them?

Trible interpretation comes out of her second wave feminism (60's and 70's). She draws on on pretty standard ways of how Hebrew narrative works. In other words, in this type of narrative the details are spared and you are to understand the characters through actions.
Something to think about is why did Eve eat the apple? The serpent told her that the apple would satisfy her hunger, make her beautiful, and also make her wise. She describes Adam as passive and Eve as decisive.
