Song of Songs
What
does it mean? Basically it means "the best of the best" songs. When the
Jews were driven out of Jerusalem they put together a text of holy writings
in order to preserve them. Now the question- how did this erotic
love song get into the holy scripture? Plainly, it was beloved and they
wanted to preserve it. It may have been performed as a play. Some say it
is a epithalanium- a poem celebrating a marriage. This poem is very influential
on secular western, jewish, and christian. This poem is written like
a "blazon", which means you are telling the whole world how beautiful your
lover is. Usually the writer is a male, this poem is unique because the
woman express her desire also. This poem is attributed to Solomon, not
written by him. This poem is a man and a woman going back and forth expressing
their desires using agricultural metaphors (i.e. your hair is like sheep's
fur- you get the point). There are many symbols of wealth and surplus used
in this poem (i.e. honey, milk, grapes, figs). The connection with archaic
lyric here is that love is the most important thing in life.
Jeremiah
In this piece, Jeremiah is prophecizing to the Jews- repent or be conquered. This reading wa assigned to give you an idea that at one time women had roles as priestesses.
Ezekiel
This is Ezekiel speaking for
God. He uses misogynist (woman hating) metaphors such as:
'turning woman over to be raped' is the same as
'turning Israel to be conquered'. This type of misogynist writing
and thinking is used in Christian writing also.
