Women in Southern Arizona
in the Early Twentieth Century
The purpose of this web site is to highlight the ways in which women in the early twentieth century helped to shape Arizona history.  The primary goal of our project is to dispel commonly held stereotypes that women at this time were passive or unimportant in affecting  the development of the Western frontier.  Historical accounts too often neglect to consider women's agency both in and out of the
domestic sphere.  Women in Arizona in the early 20th century influenced history in a multitude of ways, typically under-represented in  popular depictions of pioneer life.  By exploring women's roles in education, religion, politics, medicine (with special attention paid to the Carondelet sisters), literature, and the action of "ordinary women" we have begun to uncover the significance of their contributions.
