WS 240 Class Notes

April 24, 2001

 
*    Class started late because of the pro-choice rally
    *    Extra credit was offered for a write up on the rally.
 
*    Nicole made an announcement about a women's forum meeting on Friday:
    *    Sowing Seeds of Change:   A Women's Studies Forum
    *    April 27, 2001 from 3-5 p.m. Comm 206
    *    Nicole spoke on the benefits of the Women's Study department
        *    It helps to develop not only reading and writing skills but also critical thinking skills that would be beneficial in the job market today.

*    Professor McBride spoke about what we will be doing for the rest of the semester.
    *    There will be a quiz on both Thursday, April 26 and also one on Tuesday, May 1.
        *    The May 1 quiz will be for extra credit.
    *    The final essay will be due on Tuesday, May 1.
    *    There will also be a party on May 1, so every one should bring something in for the class to share.

*    We discussed the final exam and Professor McBride said she would try to have the study guide out for Thursday.
    *    BRING BLUE BOOKS FOR EXAM!
    *    You may also bring one piece of paper (two sides) with notes to the final exam.
    *    The final will be comprehensive.
 
*    We discussed the article "From Feminism to Postfeminism, Women's Liberation in Fashion Magazines", written by Shelly Budgeon and Dawn H. Currie.
    *    ProfessorMcBride thought this might be a useful article to include in the final paper.
    *    One question raised was, why do women read these magazines?
        *    Some answers given were:  they were a fantasy indulgence, it is a view into a more luxurious lifestyle, and some articles were read for informative
                purposes.
    *    What do these magazines sell?
        *    Sex, racism, and consumerism.
    *    What are some of the images portrayed in these magazines of women's bodies?
        *    There is always ONE ideal type, this type may change but there will always be one unattainable ideal.
        *    The ideal is connected to money and class status.
        *    Women of color are seen as animalistic and exotic.
 
 
 

*    Thoughts on the benefits of an education in women's studies
    *    Focus on critical thinking!!
    *    Not just learning facts, but understanding why things are the way they are in our society.
    *    Only department on campus that has its own writing center.

*    On Thursday, April 26 there will be a quiz
*    Next Tuesday, May 1 - Bonus quiz on study guide
*    Final exam will be May 10 11 am - 1pm in our regular classroom.

    *    Womens magazines - readers can vicarously become like the " rich and famous"
    *    The articles dicuss " how to be a women"
    *    What, besides products, do these  magazines sell?
        *    sex images, consumerism,
        *    Today's images of women's bodies are different from those of the past - changes , never a variety of "ideals"
            *    It 's impossibe to obtain those fantasies because they are connected to money and privilege
            *    One hundred years ago having lots of food to eat was considered part of the privileged life, so society's view of an attractive woman was a plump one
            *    Now more white women consider being tan a privilege because it implies having the leisure time to lay in the sun.
            *    Years ago, it  was a privlilage to be pale white, to show that you didn't have to work out in the sun
    *    Magazine images- Altered by computers , no one has that ideal  look
        *    Do not exist in reality
        *    "Ideal " constructs a desire to consume and spend
            *    Buying the right product
            *    Increasingly more pressure on men to live up to an ideal body image
            *    Eating disorders are increasing in men

*    Our final exam will be May 10 from 11- 1 in our regular classroom
    *    Comprehensive-- will cover material from the entire semester
