This section allows you to interpret spatial data to answer research questions about the settlement system of the Early Classic Period Marana Community. Read the directions carefully and then use appropriate themes and views to formulate and support your answers.
Your study area is the portion of the Northern Tucson Basin that lies between the northern tip of the Tucson Mountains and the southern and western sides of the Tortolita Mountains (Figures 1 and 2).

Figure 2 is very important for a couple of reasons. First, it provides a clear look at the entire study area; the themes and views you use in your analysis are all within the boundary of, and in the same orientation as, this map (map north is always at the top of your computer screen!). In each full-sized theme, the Tortolita Mountains are in the northeast corner, the Tucson Mountains are in the south central portion, and the Santa Cruz River runs between them from the southeast to the northwest. Second, this map provides a lucid look at the distribution of rockpile fields in relation to ecological zones. Notice how the known rockpile fields (black shaded polygons) fall almost entirely within either Zone 2 or Zone 4 and are lacking in Zones 1, 3, 5, and 6.
