GENERAL EXPECTATIONS
I expect your essays to be well organized and coherent, with a thesis statement at the beginning of the essay, topic statements at the beginning of every paragraph, smooth transitions between paragraphs and ideas, no or few grammatical errors, and several detailed examples ***(complete with IPA transcription using the names of symbols)*** to back up EVERY assertion you make. Furthermore, while you may use examples at the lexical, syntactic or pragmatic level, you MUST include examples at the phonological level as well.
You are writing both an informative and persuasive paper. As the reader, I should both understand what you are talking about and be convinced that you have made a strong argument for your case. IMPORTANT NOTE: This is not a plot summary or a review of the artistic merits of the movie. If you write a plot summary or a movie review, your grade will be an automatic 'D'. See grading rubric below for more details. Your grade will be dependent upon all of these elements. Content and organization are the most important elements, but if your grammatical/syntax errors are significant enough to distract me from the content of your argument, then this will affect your grade. Make sure you read the assignment carefully and understand it before you begin.
GRADING RUBRIC
An 'A' paper is well organized and coherent, with a thesis statement at the beginning of the essay, topic statements at the beginning of every paragraph, smooth transitions between paragraphs and ideas, no or few grammatical errors, and meets or exceeds the assignment's length requirement. Additionally, an 'A' paper includes several detailed examples, mostly at the phonological level (using IPA transcription) to back up every assertion it makes regarding dialect features.
A 'B' paper is like that of an 'A' paper except that it may contain phonetically transcribed examples of dialect for most but not all assertions you make OR it may rely more heavily on examples at the lexical, syntactic, or pragmatic level. Additionally, a 'B' paper may be an 'A' paper contentwise but it has minor grammatical errors or minor organizational problems. A 'B' paper meets or exceeds the length requirement.
A 'C' paper may have organization, coherence, or grammatical problems that hinder a smooth reading of the paper, but not to the extent that the paper is uncomprehendable. A 'C' paper may also be a little shy of the assignment length requirement and may contain few phonetically transcribed examples of dialect-related assertions made in the paper or rely solely on lexical, syntactic, or pragmatic level examples. NOTE: A paper may be a great analysis of dialect stereotypes, but if it contains few examples and/or no phonetically transcribed examples at the phonological level, then it will automatically receive a 'C'.
A 'D' paper has severe organizational, coherence, or grammatical problems so that the reader has trouble comprehending what is being communicated. A 'D' paper may be signficantly shorter than the length requirement. A paper with no dialect-related examples at all will receive a 'D' no matter how well-written it is or how good the analsysis/argument is. An off-topic paper will also receive an automatic 'D' regardless of how well organized or coherent it is. Examples of off-topic papers include plot summaries, movie reviews, or anything else that does not address the assignment description.
