The charts below have been modified by removing their English sounds. As a way of familiarizing yourself with the IPA symbols for English sounds, you can print this page and try filling them in on your own. Make sure to choose "Print Frame" in your browser's "File" menu.

Note that not every blank space in these charts needs to be filled in. For example, even though the "Labiodental Flap" area is blank, you do not need to put a symbol there since English does not have such a sound.

Some spaces in the consonant chart need two symbols: ones for both voiced and voiceless counterparts. In these cases, write the symbol for the voiced sound on the right, and the symbol for the voiceless sound on the left.

To check your answers, you can go to the main IPA page or to the Sounds of American English page.

In this vowel chart, blank spaces have been added to help you find which symbols need to be filled.
